100 Yrs Celebrated at The Avenue BC, Leamington

Monday 14th August 2023     Today’s game gave us the opportunity to visit a bowls club within walking distance of the the National Championships in Victoria Park.   It was to celebrate their 100th Anniversary.   I arrived at the club to be met by Geoff Moran the Captain, and the Clubs President John Hughes, behind the bar.  The weather was good for us and once everyone was ready we made a start on the green.

A great start, with the spider which was won by our member Jenny Ralph.

There was also the exchange of pens and a centenary badge before the game started.

The game was played with plenty of laughter on all rinks.  The final score was 113 – 126 but we did win 4 of the 6 rinks.

After the game things changed from the usual celebration.  We all changed and walked around the corner about 100yds, some still carrying their drinks, to Lina’s Place for the after-match meal. We had previously been asked to choose from the menu (8 choices) when we arrived for the game, and for desserts we were offered lemon tart or black forest gateaux.   All very nice, and the staff were duly thanked.   We returned to the club following our meal, with our empty glasses and the bar was very busy thereafter!   The Captains delivered their speeches, and the top rinks for each side were congratulated.   The Friend’s Top Rink was Judith Smith, Marie Borthwick, Paul Robson and myself.   There were calls of “fiddle!” as we only won after a countback of the ends won.   The Avenue BC’s Top Rink was Karen, Dawn, Graham and Geoff (the Captain).  Geoff was very evident on the green as can be seen in the photos.

A raffle brought the days events to a close, and players made their way back home or to temporary lodgings for those staying in Leamington for the Championships.

Once again another very good day of sport and entertainment enjoyed by all.
