A Challenging Game at Salisbury

Salisbury 14th September 2024

The day started well with warm sunny weather but with a refreshing breeze.  We were greeted at the club with a splendid buffet lunch, most unexpected and provided by the club so we tucked into a lovely selection of sandwiches making preparing us well for the battle ahead.  A very hard battle it turned out to be for some of us.  Salisbury has some very talented bowlers and fielded at least 3 of their Middleton Cup winning team from a couple of weeks ago at Leamington.  We battled on, the weather stayed fine and the banter flowed.

We were kept adequately refreshed by Jim and his team behind the bar and at the end of play the Friends declared victory by 108 shots to 94.  A very respectable score for both sides and as it was 3 rinks each,  I declared it to be a draw.

More food followed the game, and it was delicious.  Head chef Toby and his helpers Margaret Sandy and Jackie served us a wonderful home cooked Lasagne, Salad and Garlic bread.  Sweet was Pavlova, again home-made by Toby who we know was working on it at the club the previous evening to gone 10pm.   A wonderful club effort and a credit to Salisbury.

We of course had winning rinks on both sides.  For the Friends, Margaret Morris, Adie Booth, Brian Robinson and Mike Skerry took the honours.  Salisbury’s finest were Ed, Nicky, Ashley & Fraser. Well played all.

Our final outdoor match of the season will be long remembered for the best of reasons.  Good food, good bowling and most importantly, we made more good friends.  Thank you Salisbury.

I wish you all a happy and healthy closed season and if you must play on a carpet, enjoy that too. Looking forward in anticipation to another busy Friends year in 2025.
