Sunday 8th September saw the Friends at Burford in Oxfordshire. A club that has been bowling for 93 years. The town of Burford is based on a hill and has a very popular high street, such that many of the Friends could be seen before the game enjoying the shops. The weather forecast was a bit suspect, however we were fortunate that there was only a light shower for a few minutes at the end of the game.
The Friends were welcomed by Pat Walker, Captain of the Day, and the Burford team had a few additions from local clubs due to a clash with a league fixture taking several members away. The game was played in excellent spirit with the Friends coming out on top by 108 v 74 and 5 rinks to 1. The top rink for the Friends was Rink 5 made up of Frank Botting, Brian Haines, Sue Skerry and skipped by Paul Osborn. The top rink for Burford was made up of Stephen W, Leslie W, Trevor C and Brian C. After the game there was an excellent meal with the highlight being the puddings. Who could turn down the Eaton Mess with additional ice cream!
After the meal there were the usual speeches and a rendering of Happy Birthday for Burford’s Darren who was celebrating his 32nd birthday. Prizes were awarded to the top rinks, and to the Friends losing rink it was suggested that they had been playing too much bowls and should ‘take a break’ and were awarded a Kit Kat each.
The Friends Certificate was awarded to Pat as a memento of our visit, and everyone was wished a safe journey home. This was particularly relevant because 5 miles away many of the roads were flooded giving us another reminder how lucky we had been.
