Annual Highlight : Friends v BE Select

Tuesday 27th August 2024  The National Championships at Victoria Park, Leamington Spa have been running now for 12 days, and today Friends challenge a BE select Team in their annual match.  The weather, whilst a bit dull, was warm but blowy  –  thankfully not cold, like the previous weekend. This year we began the game earlier to allow BE to fit in more Championship games after we had vacated the green.   Players met on D…

Friends play well at Peninsula BC

Monday 5th August ’24   Little did I know that the helpful lady who stepped aside for me so that I could reach the mini wine bottles (my top rink prizes) was Club President Jenny, who I would meet again later.    My diary from 2018 informs me that I played at Peninsula  on Tuesday July 10th.  The club I arrived at today looks nothing like the club I played at 6 years ago.  The surrounding area…

It got Heated in Canterbury

Sunday 4th August ’24 Day two of our weekend in Kent, and the sun was out in full force.  Our game today was at Canterbury Bowling Club, and what a magnificent venue, a lovely roomy clubhouse, and great facilities, with two greens available for play.   Many of the Friends arrived early, and it was a pleasure to spend time relaxing in the sunshine with a cool drink, and filled rolls were available to keep the…

Our Kent Games began at Herne Bay BC

Saturday 3rd August The first of our three games in Kent took us to Herne Bay BC.  So nice to take a peek at the sea, before we found our way to the venue.   Friends from 11 different counties were made welcome to the specious clubhouse.  Today was a good temperature – the sun was just about out – and after a little confusion over the start time, we all collected together for the traditional…

A Joy to Play DBE at Bredon BC

Outside of the clubhouse we collected together for a group…

Tewkesbury BC warmly welcomes Friends

Saturday 27th July 2024 Tewkesbury Bowling Club, the second oldest club in Gloucestershire, was bathed in sunshine when we arrived to be greeted by the club Chairman Stewart and Captain Malcolm, but a heavy shower arrived which happily stopped before the game started.  However, apart from a light shower in the middle of the game, the rain stayed away and an excellent game was enjoyed in a beautiful setting with Tewkesbury Abbey in the background….

Day 2: Friends v. BE President’s Select Team

We travelled as Friends, or BE players and supporters, from 14 different counties to West Bridgford to meet and play for the Ian Woodcock trophy, a beautiful cut glass claret jug which  Ian, a former English Bowling president, donated  to initiate our keenly contested match. David (DKT), our BE President and the club made us very welcome.  They helped to park our cars safely, had tea and coffee ready, the bar open and lunch prepared…

Day 1 in Nottinghamshire at Keyworth BC

Saturday 20th July 2024     My journey from Buckingham to Keyworth BC went well, the weather looked perfect for an afternoon of bowling, and at the clubhouse we received a warm welcome from President Richard and Captain Maurice.    As far as the captain of the day was concerned, all was going swimmingly, until the dreaded happens  – a re-shuffle of the teams was required before play could commence.  Thank goodness Adie was on hand…
